How Villains Are Made

The date is May 13th 1884, the posse has been gathered together by Emma Schneider and Qui Long Wang some three days prior in the Town of South Pass City in the middle of the Wyoming territory to meet a contact of theirs from the Explorer’s Society. The Contact is the one and only Lacy O’Mally of The Tombstone Epitaph and he has instructions for the posse for an investigation looking into the whereabouts of a missing Union agent and the status of his investigations into some weird events going on within Uinta County Wyoming.

Two weeks Prior to the meeting of the posse the adventurous duo Emma Schneider Investigator of the Curious and Weird along with her traveling companion Qui Long Wang Shaolin Monk and Mystic who are also agents of the secretive Dawn Legion had been making their way to the township of Lovelock, a waystation on the Humboldt Trail to California, in Nevada’s Lake Lahontan region. It was here that the two were going to investigate the legends and possible evidence of Red Headed Giants told by the local indiginous tribes within the area. When Emma and Qui arrived at Denver they were met by a Dawn Legion agent and asked to form a posse and go to the Wyoming Territory and meet with Lacy O’Mally to help find a missing Union agent. Always eager for a mystery worthy of their skills they agreed to go and find the missing agent and acquire any evidence into his investigations. Emma and Qui needed some extra talent to help with this endeavor though and Emma felt she knew a couple desperados from their shared past that could give that help. She just had to use the right incentives.

James Chandler has been spending the last few years in and out of saloons and river boats in and around New Orleans eking out his existence as a Gambler and Huckster. He has been trying to forget, trying to forget his time in the Confederate army and the things he saw in the War between the States (not just the killing and bloodshed but things darker and unnatural). He is trying to forget his time as a Union POW, and most of all he is trying to forget the death of his wife. But the catch is that the thing within him that gives him his newfound powers won’t let him forget. Every night James has nightmares of his past, his dead wife and things that rend, and tear, and eviscerate. All to the delightful glee of his sorcerous teacher, the manitou residing within him.

James was in another saloon morosely collecting his winnings and overthinking the breakup of his last girlfriend when he got the letter from Emma Schneider and Qui Long Wang. He remembered Emma as a geeky, know it all patent clerk from his days when he worked the The Black River Line RailRoad who would tout some regulation or bit of science while looking over her glasses at you. Qui, he remembered as a hard working Chinaman that could swing a hammer better than anybody on the line but would also like to ramble on about red headed giants or how he fueled his mystic powers from bulls testicles. He had not talked to or seen the both of them since “the incident” at the rail construction site that one horror filled evening and now that is something else he is going to have to try and forget. Emma’s letter was straightforward and to the point, she claimed that there had been sightings of a woman fitting the description of his late wife throughout the territories, unfortunately these sightings also seemed to be associated with some grisly killings in these areas as well. Emma did not know if or how they were connected but she said she could help investigate the matter and find the truth. The deal is that she and Qui needed help in Wyoming trying to find a missing Union agent first.

With nothing better to do James packed what little belongings he had, wrote a goodbye letter to his maybe ex girlfriend and took a train to South Pass City to put his Huckster powers to the test, help find a missing agent and possibly his dead wife.

“The Colonel” John Henry Morgan has been spending the last couple of years of his unlife hunting down members of the Stonewall Gang who brutaly murdered him and his family on their horse ranch back in the late summer of ‘82. Jose Marquez found in Lincoln, Nebraska and Jake Parker found in Spring Creek, South Dakota both members of the gang and caught by The Colonel back in ‘83. They died slowly from gut shots and as The Colonel watched them bleed out and his vengeance unfolded the manitou inside him fueling his unlife tittered delightfully.

As of two weeks ago The Colonel has been wandering the Wyoming territory looking for Emmet Cobb of the late Stonewall gang but the trail has grown cold. Unexpectedly he received a letter from Emma Schnieder and her associate Qui Long Wang asking for his assistance in finding a Union agent in Uinta County. In return she could help him find his last targets Emmet Cobb and Tyler Meeks, but warns that her sources claimed that Tyler Meeks is not human anymore, is forming a new gang and extremely dangerous. If The Colonel wants to hunt down Meeks he is going to need help. She did not say how she knew all this or how she found The Colonel, only that she would explain more if he met her in South Pass City.

The Clonel did not know Qui but remembered Emma as an overly confident young lady that was often too smart for her own good, she reminded him a lot of his daughter Katie. Long ago in the Colonel’s past Emma was a green patent officer helping oversee the delivery of some new steam gatling guns during the early years of the war. The guns worked great but screamed like a choir of demons as they mowed down Confederate soldiers like wheat in a thresher. Like a bad dream that same night after the skirmish Confederate and Union dead rose and attacked their position. The Colonel saw many of his men cut down, stymied from fear and confusion as the dead ran down on them. The Colonel saved Emma’s life from a revenet’s bayonet and the upper brass covered the whole incident up to as “not to affect the morale of the other units”. With this in mind and the trail for Emmet gone cold the Colonel decides to go and hear Emma and her associate Qui out in south Pass City. With few choices left to him the Colonel checked his guns, turned his horse in the direction of the town to meet up with some young lady he hardly knows that can give him information on his foes in exchange to help her find some Union agent. The work of vengeance can not be stopped he says to himself as he spurs his horse down the road. Inside The Colonel the manitou gibbers and laughs repeating vengeance over and over again.

The Posse is currently one day’s ride outside the town of Sundown to meet the Dawn Society’s Contact Lacy O’Mally.
