See Applying Damage: The damage of an attack is compared to the victim’s Toughness just like a Trait roll. Trait rolls succeed if they match the Target Number.
2)
To cause a wound, Shaken result must come from a physical attack of some kind–not a Test of Wills or other maneuver. Note: the example on page 76 contradicts this: “a rogue has already taunted the beast and Shaken it.”

See example on page 76. If you hit with “a raise or more … the ogre is already Shaken, and since a wound was caused, there’s no further effect.” See also Savage Worlds Adventure Edition p. 94.
